Introducing our Guiding Principles
June 15th, 2012 | Posted by in SpaceWe’ve put a lot of thought into how Makespace should operate – learning from the experience of other spaces, talking to the community, and working through scenarios. The result is the first draft of our Guiding Principles, which sets out how we intend to work. These may change in the future – we’re going to be learning for a long time! – but this document sets out what we think is important, and these principles will guide our decisions in the coming months. There’s a lot of unknowns in what we’re doing, and it’s much easier to have some principles by which we can apply to problems as they arise, than to try to plan everything out in advance.
We’d welcome any feedback you might have – do comment below, or email us at info at makespace.org ! Do bear in mind this is our first draft, so if anything is unclear or seems really wrong, please let us know and don’t panic

The principles look great! Very well done
Fine as far as they go, but these are the guiding principles of an accountant (necessary as that may be).
I’m more interested in how to implement day to day stuff like “Duty of care”, in other words your responsibility for your own actions (or indeed inactions) and for the actions of others.
My interpretation of Health and Safety is that If you observe an activity which you could reasonably be expected to know was unsafe about to take place, you have an unavoidable duty to stop it.
There also needs to be a mechanism whereby whenever a new piece of machinery is introduced, appropriate rules of operation are established and published, and if necessary appropriate standards for training to operate.
Why would health and safety need to be included in the guiding principles? The guiding principles are surely about how the organisation develops…?
